Scalito Nominated
Samuel A. Alito, a White Catholic male who believes that women can be legally compelled to inform their husbands before an abortion and is nicknamed "Scalito," has been nominated to replace Sandra Day O'Connor. We can debate whether Roe v. Wade going down would be good for the pro-choice cause in the long run, but no matter what, history won't look kindly to an all-male majority decision. If confirmed, he would be the fifth Catholic currently on the court. Gee, I wonder if the death penalty will become illegal now? (That's sarcasm, people.)

does that ever get seriously addressed? the catholic pro-death penalty thing, i mean. thursday's daily show had a "great moments in punditry as read by children" where colmes brought this up to some catholic guest (maybe a priest or something?) and ann coulter quashed the discussion by responding "can a good catholic kill a girl at chappaquiddick?" which pretty much killed that. i find it bizarre that i'm analyzing a great moments in punditry bit for the actual punditry.
Five Catholics? Really? That seems weird, doesn't it? Who are the current four (I don't want to do the research myself, you can tell me).
I miss the good old days of Al Smith when we Americans feared Catholics and wouldn't let them near public service.
Anyway, you're pretty much screwed on this one. The Democrats should have been bad-mouthing Harriet Miers in the hope of tricking Republicans into thinking she was good enough. At least you had a shot at her turning out to be acceptable, albeit a small one. Now, you've got nothing. You know who Alito is and where he stands, and you're not going to like it when he rolls through confirmation with 55 votes.
You'd better start getting your conservative buddies in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island to start lobbying Specter and Chafee hard. The only chance you have is if the moderates defect, and there aren't that many moderates.
Good luck.
The current four Catholics are: Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, and Kennedy. Alito would be the fifth.
As for being screwed, I knew we were screwed when Bush was re-elected. Supporting Harriet Miers for "strategic" reasons would never have gotten her confirmed anyway, and even if it did, I'm not convinced one way or the other that an unqualified jurist would've been good for the court no matter her political standpoint. The Dems need to try their best to take down Alito -- otherwise, they'd all look pretty dumb when Alito starts doing the Scalia dance in a few years down the line. If he votes to overturn or greatly slash roe v wade and the dems didn't fight him, they'd look especially feeble. The fight isn't about taking him down, it's about doing the right thing (w/ the small chance of taking him down if, say, it was revealed that he smoked marijuana with law students).
BTW, Drudge is trying to hype that the nickname "Scalito" is racist.
I'm Italian-American, and although that doesn't give me the final say on what constitutes racism, I feel quite secure that "Scalito" isn't racist at all. Well, maybe it's about as racist as "Bennifer."
You are Siclian-American, you bastard.
I meant Sicilian-American.
Antonin Scalia is an Italian Asshole. Which part of that is incorrect?
Har de har har, Jon May. (ps. where's your hand drawing?)
I couldn't figure out how combining two guys' names was racist either.
Also, I like abortion, but I think Roe v. Wade is a bad decision and logically should be overturned... but it would be bad for the country if it were. I'm all twisted around on this one.
finished. i'm nervous now cause all them damn artists found out about it.
I'm just not into this selective spousal control. I think our husbands should legally be able to force us to do their bidding at any time, including but not limited to giving them blowjobs, having abortions, and beating giraffes to death in front of preschoolers. Then, while they're at it, why don't they add an ammendment officially creating a ceiling for female salaries so we can never, never make any progress or have any power?
As for being screwed, I knew we were screwed when Bush was re-elected.
-I love you.
looks we're all having fun this halloween!
Does writing a paper about a subject that in reality is way over my head count as fun? I guess I should be asking myself that. But I had fun for Halloween on Sat., dressed as Karl Rove and striking LEWD poses.
