Bookslut Interview with William T. Vollmann

Bookslut interview with William T. Vollmann, a favorite writer of mine. Even if you don't know anything about Vollmann, it's a good interview for getting acquainted with his war zone trips, adventures with prostitutes, and his view on whether or not he'd be a Nazi if born in Germany in the early 20th century.

I find the name and the graphics of that blog distasteful.

I think that anybody who is intelligent and honest has to acknowledge that there's a pretty good chance you'd end up as a NAZI. Or as a slave owner/slave owner sympathizer if they grew up in the pre-Civil War South.

If you look at the percentage of people who supported those institutions and the percentage who opposed them internally, odds are you're going to be a supporter. It's hard to see the problems inherent in a system like that when it's working to your advantage.

Hell, when the world is a socialist paradise in 400 years we're all going to look like inhumane monsters (yes, even you green party folks). They'll be asking why we didn't take up arms to overthrow the oppression of the wealthy? Why did we all tolerate it for so long?

My point is lost.

What does Godwin's Law have to say about conversations that are about Nazis in the first place?

I think in those cases, Hitler himself loses.
