Mel Gibson: Governor?

With Governor Schwarzenegger losing populariy and the recent rejection of his initiatives, some disgruntled Republicans are trying to draft Mel Gibson to run for California governor. According to the website:

...Gibson has a leg up on Schwarzenegger — having been born in New York, he could be President someday.

Don't make me defend my state to a bunch of New Englanders. :P

Republicans, at least in this state, seem to have glommed onto the idea that running celebrities is the way to win. (They probably also like that celebrities can bankroll their own campaigns.) It is shortsighted and trendy and probably lost them the statehouse, in that former LA mayor Richard Riordan could have won the last gubernatorial election for them and has the skills to STAY in office.

I have very little political knowledge, but suspect that this also reflects a dearth of really strong candidates from the political world. Republicans in particular have run some really poor gubernatorial candidates since I moved back here.

I would totally vote for Nancy Pelosi for governor, not that my preferences reflect the mainstream.

eh, i am actually in favor of celebs running. it exposes the massive flaws in the 2 party system. celebs who have clout in their own right are some of the only people who have any power independent of party machinations - Ventura, Bill Bradley & 'Negger have actually shown some - gasp - personally consistent and libertarian tendencies.
And say what you will about Reagan, he led his party, not the other way around. Nothin' wrong with that.

I totally agree; I'm just not sure we're any better off with celebrities setting the agenda. Their independence allows them to not toe the party line, but by the same token, it means nobody's stopping them from pursuing crazy or doomed pet ideas.

Although if you gave me a choice between a two-party world and a world with several Jesse Venturas across a broad ideological spectrum, I think I'd choose Ventura-land. So OK, maybe celebrities in politics just make me cringe because they're celebrities.
