Christian reviews of Brokeback Mountain

Two guardedly positive reviews of Brokeback Mountain from Christian publications. It's sort of the opposite of the Seinfeld catchphrase: This movie is pretty well-made and about a gay relationship, not that there's anything right with that. (via as)

Update:The Catholic church and media got very upset over that first review.

Is it just me or does this movie seem like a total chick flick?

On the second review, they included helpful "discussion questions." Most of them were fine, but this one struck me as odd:

"Do Ennis and Jack love each other because they're gay, or are they gay because they love each other? Explain."

If you applied that to hetero relationships, it would sound absurd. Are you straight, sir, because you love your wife, or do you love your wife because you're straight?

I don't know Jon, that Catholic News site mentions a few scenes with "bare breasted" wives...

Crazymonk, I thought that you weren't
interested in Brokeback Mountain.

I'm interested in its existence; I'm still not that interested in seeing it. I only will if I hear positive word-of-mouth from people I trust.

Saw it last night with Mike and Craig. Mike and I both liked it - it was hot, with pretty scenery, and Heath Ledger turned out to be a surprisingly good actor (who knew?). Craig didn't think it was daring enough. But I'd prefer (perhaps naively) not to see that as the point... Though not the best movie I've ever seen, I do think it had merits outside of being a "gay" movie with appeal to a mainstream audience.

Neat. But in Heath Ledger's defense, I liked him in "A Knight's Tale."

Wow, another refernce to A Knight's Tale on crazymonk.com.

I like when Catholic websites get mad at each other for not being Catholic enough. It was a nice touch to include the contact info at the bottom so you can complain to the other Catholics. They're not even complaining about the movie any more... just those who don't condemn it enough.

I was particularly delighted that among the objections of the more homophobic of the two homophobic Catholics (the linked criticism the first review), was the indignant charge that in the movie "sexual 'repression' is depicted as evil." Jesus clearly forbade such a thing. Think of the children. (The straight, straight children.)
But you gotta love the ironic quotes around "repression"!

I saw this movie tonight. I thought it was very touching, rich, and it made my stomach knot up and my heart sink. It wasn't meant for any particular crowd, but there were many gay couples at this movie, which wasn't a surprise. But I noticed as some people (straight couples) who caught on to the whole plot (during the first sex scene), the couples walked out.
I loved this movie. Even though it was hard to watch at times.

Poor stupid straight people, obsessed with homosexuals and angry about their own obsession.
This movie's open a whole can of worms for their little minds to struggle with.
Here's what straight people are saying:
"Butt sex! Oh my god! I cant fathom it so it becomes hilarious to me!"
"Any other dick besides mine terrifys me."
"The Bible says gays are evil and its a great book that hasnt lost relevance at all!"
"I walked in late, did i miss the part when the cowboys were molested as children? How else could they be gay?"

Sorry to those straight guys who cant understand gay people and leave their minds to rest.
It must be so HARD for you to live a quiet life...
