Interview with Darren Aronofsky

Interview with director Darren Aronofsky about his upcoming film The Fountain. This isn't brand new, but I just read it today. My favorite part: David Bowie may compose a third Major Tom song (after "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes") with Clint Mansell for the soundtrack. (via kottke)

Man, the Fountain? Are they doing a movie version of Atlas Shrugged next? I bet they've got Ted Nugent lined up to do the soundtrack. I can see the track listings now:

"It's OK to Kill"
"Ragnar - A Pirate's Theme"
"The Secret Valley"
"90 Pages Of Stuff You've Already Read 900 Pages About And It's Just A Repeat Don't Bother Reading This Part"
"Giant Gold Dollar Sign"
"John Galt Came to Rock"
"A is A is AWESOME"

Actually, if I spent a little bit of time on this I bet it could be funny. Oh well.

You know, there actually is a Fountainhead movie -- I think it came out in the 50's.

Fountainhead didn't have a plot, it was nothing but 800 pages of characterization. I can't imagine a movie version being very good... especially if it was made in the 50s. At least Atlas Shrugged had an (admittedly weird) plot.

I really would like to hear a song called "A is A is AWESOME."

By the way, did I ever tell you that my dad invested in a Jack Abramoff movie once?

The Fox | Sat, 04/15/2006 - 5:51am

about him or by him?

jon may | Sat, 04/15/2006 - 10:02am

I think he produced it or some such... hold on, let me see if I can remember which movie...

Yeah, here we go: Red Scorpion. He's got a writing credit. It stars everyone's favorite poor man's Arnold Schwarzenneger: Dolph Lundgren. Someone on the IMDB forum had this to say:

"Red Scorpion" was part of Abramoff's propaganda/lobby work on the part of the apartheid South African government. He was hired by that government to improve it's racist undemocratic image in the U.S. and to demonize Nelson Mandela.

The Black African anti-Communist revolutionary was based on Jonas Savimbi who was a stooge for the apartheid S.A. government and of U.S. conservative groups like The Heritage Foundation.

Neat.

Wait, your dad gave money to indirectly support apartheid? That's pretty fucked up.

crazymonk | Sat, 04/15/2006 - 1:33pm

I'm pretty sure everybody alive from 1960 through 1990 gave money indirectly to support Apartheid. One of the perils of economics is that you can't really isolate a country unless everyone's on board.

The Fox | Sat, 04/15/2006 - 1:52pm

Ah, I got the impression that he invested in the movie knowing full well Abramoff's mercenary motivations.

crazymonk | Sat, 04/15/2006 - 2:25pm

Yeah, I don't think so.

However, I imagine that they knew him because of his dealings in the Republican party... so maybe that counts as tacitly supporting Apartheid... judgment call on that one.

The Fox | Sat, 04/15/2006 - 2:51pm

i'd chalk this one up to "jews supporting jews." and really, that should stop.
