Kurt Vonnegut dead

Kurt Vonnegut died this evening. It would be hard for me to put into words the influence Vonnegut had on me during my teenage years. If you haven't read Cat's Cradle yet, now is the time. (thx, steve)

I have not ever read any of Kurt's work, but I did hear a quote of his I liked. He said something along the lines of that he'd given speeches that were so boring that he had fallen asleep during them.

If you like that side of Kurt Vonnegut, you should pick up "A Man Without a Country," his latest book (non-fiction) -- you can read it in a few hours, and you'll get a quick taste of how his mind worked.

I guess I've read like 4 or 5 of his books, and while Cat's Cradle is obviously dope, I'd like to put in a good word for a less widely touted one, Sirens of Titan. It's older, and it's less satire and more standard science fiction, and it's excellent.

My favorite non-fiction writer of all time. I read that he had taken a fall just a few weeks ago and suffered irreparable brain damage. Shame. But damn, what a good author.

I am shocked that you loved Vonnegut as a teen. How different! Don't tell me you enjoyed Catcher in the Rye as well.

Catcher in the Rye didn't do much for me. But after college I read Nine Stories, and I realized that high school English classes were picking the wrong book. I read the rest of Salinger one by one after that, and Catcher is the least of the bunch.
