If you were jumping over a highway median while smoking a cigarette and brandishing a handgun towards a bunch of cops, following an armed robbery and a high-speed car chase, I'm pretty sure you couldn't look more badass than this. Of course, you'd also get shot and arrested. (via reddit)

The Las Vegas Sun has a fascinating account of a Las Vegas poker dealer who puts up hitmanforhire.net and actually gets hired to do several jobs, with an M.O. of extorting money from his targets in exchange for their lives. The sordid tale involves bigamy, Ricin, funny aliases, and ends (so far) in an Irish jail. (via zenarchery)

This post is really only for my Tufts University fellow alums, but I just found out that two employees were indicted for embezzling a combined $1 million from the Office of Student Activities. Since I was the chair of Tufts Film Series during the tenure of one of the employees (Jodie Nealley), it's possible my very own budget was being dipped into. How weird. (thx, jbg)

Will DNA finally save the West Memphis Three, 15 years after they were convicted for killing three young children during an alleged Satanic ritual? If you haven't seen the documentary about this case, Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, put it in your rental queue. It shows a community with an irrational fear of Metallica and black clothing, and virtually proves the guilt of the stepfather of one of the victims. (via ebert)

The Wall Street Journal reports an economist has found an error in Steven Levitt's abortion/crime analysis as described in Freakonomics, although Levitt claims the error doesn't undermine his conclusion. The most famous study in Freakonomics concludes that the foremost cause of the drastic crime rate drop since the mid-90's was the federal legalization of abortion in the early 70's, postulating that unwanted children are more likely to commit crimes.
