pixar

  • David Weinberger mostly puts into words what I felt about Wall-E, which I enjoyed and respected greatly, but felt was still constrained by what I call "the Pixar tone." Unlike David, I'm not put off by it being "another damn kids story," as I think Brad Bird's The Iron Giant and Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are all superior to the entire Pixar oeuvre. While Wall-E showed the most promise yet of Pixar breaking out of its tonal formula, it was still mired in the admittedly funny but tired wink-wink jokes that pretty much all mainstream computer animated films trade in. • With Pixar releasing a computer animated version of Doc Hollywood this week (thx, LVW for the comparison), it's time for me to reiterate how tired I am of the Pixar formula. I haven't seen Cars yet, but it looks like it has the tame humor, goofy sitcom characters, and too-clever-for-itself attitude that all of their films since Toy Story 2 have suffocated under. This wouldn't be notable except that they're written about, especially within the blogosphere, as if they're the film gods. Plus, I don't find the spare animation as seen in the trailers very inviting. Go watch some Miyazaki. (16) #
