It's tax day, so I'll collapse two wonky links into one post. Kevin Drum breaks down tax payments by income and shows that our current tax structure is much closer to a flat tax than most people believe. And here's former Secretary of Labor Bob Reich's A Short Citizen's Guide to Kooks, Demagogues, and Right-Wingers On Tax Day.

Here's an excellent and simple graph comparing the differences between Obama's and McCain's tax proposals. Kevin Drum comments:
Bottom line: If you're really rich and think that George Bush's tax cuts for the rich didn't go nearly far enough, John McCain is your man.

TurboTax is giving a $25,000 cash prize for the person who submits the best rap about taxes. Somehow I wasn't surprised by the famous rapper TurboTax picked as their judge. (thx, smiling dork)

Irwin Schiff, the author of The Federal Mafia: How the Government Illegally Imposes and Unlawfully Collects Income Taxes, was found guilty on 13 counts in a Vegas court for not paying his taxes. It turns out the theory that taxes are voluntary doesn't really work in practice in a federal court. Said a friend of his at the trial, "The people with the tax honesty movement aren't a bunch of wackos who are just trying to twist the law in their favor."
